Project Overview
As part a college project (2020), we teamed up with the NFS to create film titles for the graduating film students. The film that I was assigned was a feature film titled 'Outside the Family.' Outside the Family is a coming of age film centred around a teenage boy who comes out as gay to a conservative mother & absent father. As the film progresses the main character, Liam, starts to date an older man; who is also his lecturer at Trinity College Dublin. Liam eventually turns to the club scene, & as a result, his relationship with his mother disintegrates.
Outside the Family
This project took place at the height of the first lockdown of 2020. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, my resources were limited but not impossible! I was drawn to the themes loss of innocence, nostalgia & growing-up. Whilst at home, I decided to have a root through all the old family home videos, & found videos of my brother as a child. To contrast with the child imagery that represented innocence, I filmed new videos of my very patient 19 year old brother. To create the same aesthetic as the older videos, I used the same video camera with multiple overlays & filmed it on my TV. The music was composed by a pal & myself.
